Channel 4's Dispatches programme recently reported a dramatic increase in the number of dogs being brought into the country illegally from mainland Europe.
But it seems the trade is also happening closer to home. Strangford's DUP MP, Jim Shannon, raised the issue of backstreet puppy farms with ministers in the Commons last week. He said farms in the Republic are exporting puppies to both the province and the UK mainland and demanded cross-border action to put a stop to the trade.
