Beach litter shame

The good weather brought out more than sun-seekers to the north coast’s beaches at the weekend.

It also brought out the litter louts, hundreds of them.

They discarded 16 pick-up truck loads of rubbish on Portstewart Strand alone. Just what sort of people leave all their barbecues, beer bottles, dirty nappies and other litter on a beautiful beach for others to pick up?

Ideally we should be appealing to their better nature to prevent this happening again, but whether they have one is open to question.

Perhaps the only answer is on-the-spot fines for the litter louts.

If they refuse to act responsibly then they should be made to pay.
