Like tens of millions of able-bodied people, I found it difficult not to shed a tear at the courage and determination displayed by the athletes in the Paralympic games (News, September 10).
Never in my life have I witnessed such sporting competition carried out by human beings that were burdened by disability. It should make everyone appreciate the sacrifices these people put in to achieve their dreams.
To those of us who are free from any mental, or physical, impairment, yet blindly carry on abusing our health through addiction to drugs — whether that be tobacco, alcohol, or whatever, it’s time for a rethink. Added to that is gluttony, followed by lack of exercise that creates health impairment. Surely, if ever there was a time to change, now is that time?
