London Notebook: In the shadow of a one-liner

As predicted, Ivan Lewis deployed one of Belfast's oldest jokes at his debut speech as Shadow Secretary of State.

He told the UUP conference: "I want to dispel a myth that is doing the rounds that the first question I was asked when I was appointed was 'Are you a Protestant Jew or a Catholic Jew?'

"Thank God, there is no such option."

We can only wonder what one-liners he is preparing for next month's SDLP gathering.
