ON the day parliament started its new session, Naomi Long (below) tabled two Commons motions about puppies.

The Alliance MP wants new laws to ban the sale of puppies in pet shops and control the breeding of dogs.

She said animals bought in shops, or via the internet, are almost exclusively bred on puppy farms and there are no controls on advertising.

"Dogs are not a retail commodity and should be bought only from licensed breeders," Ms Long said.
