Viewpoint: Team's support is fan-tastic

The roller coaster ride of the emotions for Northern Ireland football fans returns with tonight's crunch match in Reykjavik.

Boss Nigel Worthington has made changes to the team that failed in Latvia. It is said he read the 'Riga riot act' after the miserable performance on Saturday.

So, can David Healy and the lads do enough to keep our hopes alive following the horror of Latvia? And if they do, are they good to again defeat mighty Spain and Sweden and get us through to the final stages of the European Championship?

It won't be for lack of support from the incredible army of Northern Ireland fans. The Sea of Green initiative, supported again tonight by the Belfast Telegraph, goes from strength to strength. More than 2,000 supporters were in Riga earlier this week and a similar number are in Iceland today. A Tele van will be in Reykjavik tonight with a supply of scarves, horns and other merchandise for the incredible Northern Ireland fans.

Their good-natured banter and enthusiasm does as good a job of selling the Province internationally as any number of tourist board commercials.

Hopefully the team's performance on the pitch will be as inspirational as that of the fans on the terraces.
