Editor's Viewpoint: A landmark game

Friday, 6 November 2009

Long experience of treading carefully through the minefield of local politics has made Belfast people masters of diplomacy.

It is a skill they have put to good use in choosing the landmarks to make up the city's version of the much-loved board game Monopoly.

Instead of plumping for streets to fill the localised versions of the squares from the traditional Old Kent Road to Mayfair, which could have caused much inter-community wrangling, they opted to fill the board with relatively neutral landmarks.

The Belfast Monopoly may have a subtle political message, though. By nominating Stormont and the City Hall as the highest valued properties the game designers were perhaps hinting at the huge earning power and expenses of our political elite.

i agree the designers did a good job almost! were they went wrong in my veiw was leaving pass go (it should have been renamed peters corner! and the jail card which reamains unaltered should have been renamed(robinsons) and i dont mean the pub! and finally the world champions quote is bang on target for this provinces politacal elite

Gritty, moving and heroic...Billy plays captured life here

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times ... Sunday's 30th anniversary screening of the seminal Too Late to Talk to Billy was riveting viewing. But it wasn't nostalgic viewing.

Parties need better defence in Stormont's game of two halves

Surprise, surprise. Peter Robinson has been to his first gaelic match, Martin McGuinness is heading for Windsor Park and the Ulster Unionists have scored another own goal.

Why trying to go on a diet is never really a piece of cake

Some people make New Year’s resolutions, I make lists. Every new year I determine to keep track of everything I spend and everything I eat and drink.

Scary movie? Their jaws were sore from laughing

Teenage boys love horror films and I have two who are in charge of the remote control in our house, so naturally there’s gore-a-plenty on the box most weekends. However, until recently one film was banned.
