Editor's Viewpoint: Floating tribute

Belfast has a proud maritime tradition and in its harbour lies a vessel that deserves to rank alongside any of the famous ships to have sailed from the port.
Built in 1914, HMS Caroline is the grand old lady of the Royal Navy, the second oldest ship in the fleet and a survivor of the Battle of Jutland in 1916. The cruiser later served as the Royal Navy's headquarters here during the Second World War and became the floating base of the Royal Naval Reserve.
Given its long association with the city, it would be fitting to preserve it as a naval museum, home to memories of a glorious past which helped to preserve the freedom we enjoy today.
