Editor's Viewpoint: Our MPs must take heed of new rules

Thursday, 5 November 2009

Sir Christopher Kelly, in his call for an end to double-jobbing - the practice of taking seats at both Westminster and Stormont - makes it clear that the practice should end sooner rather than later.

Although he said the final cut-off point for ending the practice should be 2015, it is evident that he believes 2011 is the preferred option. His argument is compelling and the 16 Northern Ireland MPs who are also members of the Assembly should take note.

Sir Christopher raises the question voiced by many other observers - can political representatives sitting in two legislatures really do justice to both roles? Even those who are not closely versed in the work of Stormont and Westminster realise that representing the electorate in either House is a very challenging role. To attempt to carry the double workload - and to do it effectively - is surely too onerous.

As the Northern Ireland Assembly and Executive beds down and members face up to the immense challenges ahead, mainly involving balancing the books in what will be very financially-straitened times, the workload of MLAs is bound to increase. With services being squeezed due to the tightening of the public purse strings, they will have to come up with more inventive ways of ensuring that the day-to-day life of the province functions properly.

Members have been set another challenge by Sir Christopher. He proposes that they should phase out the employment of relatives, paid for out of public funds. While no-one is suggesting that those currently employed are not fit for the jobs they hold, there is something distasteful about entire political families - or several members of such families - benefiting from public tax payments.

There is now no excuse for further prevarication on these issues. Sir Christopher is echoing the views of the electorate and the politicians will ignore his proposals at their peril.

Brown can't even stick to his own nonsense on Afghanistan

Bit by bit, as happened with Iraq, the reasons for staying in Afghanistan slide into gibberish. So Gordon Brown's reasons for the war seem to change every week.

Cannabis: it’s time to stop the lies and start a rational debate

It doesn't require a Leap of faith to support the growing calls for a radical rethink of policy on drugs and in particular on the decriminalisation of cannabis.

We're stuck with the Assembly . . . and it's no laughing matter

A few evenings ago the Minister of Health at Stormont, Michael McGimpsey, was to be seen on the television news offering his audience what he termed a 'joke'.

Thierry Henry's confession leaves revolting taste

The Republic of Ireland is entitled to believe it has never seen anything so cynical, so far removed from the spirit of sport, as the devilish hand played by Thierry Henry to deny Giovanni Trapattoni's team a place in the World Cup finals that would have been so thoroughly deserved.

Wenger’s way a lesson to all of us

Arsenal are scoring goals galore at the moment. Not exactly what everyone was hoping for at Sunderland ahead of our Premier League game with them tomorrow.

I Iearned a tough lesson from my first digs at uni

My nephew Joe left home this week to go to university. It’s a huge step for a teenager but if anyone can carry it off with aplomb he certainly can.

GAA scored an own goal over SF demonstration

Just because it's Nelson McCausland, it doesn't mean he's wrong. The events surrounding that Hunger Strike anniversary rally at Galbally GAA grounds pose very disturbing questions for the organisation.

Cost of pay freezes and high taxes was a culture of duplicity, envy and hypocrisy

The Chancellor was right yesterday to dismiss the idea of a High Pay Commission. His phraseology was characteristically mild: he was "not persuaded" of his merits.
