Editor's Viewpoint: League of their own

In spite of its protestations, Celtic football club cannot do without Rangers. They are like the odd couple of British football, rivals yet interdependent.

It is the ferocious rivalry between the clubs and their fans which is the lifeblood of Scottish football. Their support keeps the game afloat in a region which doesn't attract the millions poured into the English Premier League.

The sooner Rangers can get back onto a stable financial footing the better for all concerned. They are Celtic's only real competition - and vice versa - and without one the other would simply be playing in a league of their own. And who would watch that?
