Editor's Viewpoint: Tory plan bit rich
Thursday, 26 November 2009
As the opinion polls show that the Conservative Party's lead over Labour is shrinking, David Cameron should not think that entry into 10 Downing Street is a foregone conclusion.
He would be well advised not to take the electorate for granted or risk alienating voters.
His party policy to raise the threshold for paying inheritance tax to £2m for married couples smacks of rewarding the very rich at the expense of the rest of the population who are facing years of penury to pay off the national debt.
The policy would benefit only 3,000 of the richest families in the UK, including 18 members of the Shadow Cabinet. Mr Cameron must be aware that voters are fed up with politicians lining their own pockets and rewarding their snooty friends.
