Carl Frampton to fight Kiko Martinez for world title in Belfast
Venue for IBF super-bantamweight fight yet to be revealed
Belfast is to play host to Carl Frampton's rematch with Kiko Martinez in September with the IBF super-bantamweight title on the line.
The Ulsterman saw off Martinez with a ninth-round stoppage in September last year to take the European strap.
Martinez has since recovered to win the world belt, though, and will now defend it for a third time.
Frampton earned the shot by winning a title eliminator with Hugo Cazares in April - his 18th win from as many career fights.
The venue and date for the Martinez clash is to be announced.
Martinez, stopped by Frampton in a European title fight in February last year, revealed on his Facebook page last month that he had agreed to face the Jackal in a rematch of their pulsating encounter at the Odyssey Arena.
"I want to prove that defeat was just a bad day," said Martinez, who following defeat to Frampton went on to win the IBF title and make two successful defences of his belt – most recently over Hozumi Hasegawa in Japan last month.
Now it seems the Spanish bull is aiming for revenge against the Jackal and has no doubt that Frampton's fans will be left disappointed when they come head-to-head for a second time.
"Losing to Frampton made me a better fighter and a better person. I'm glad I lost that fight because I learned a lot. I then worked harder and won the world title. I can still get even better," said Martinez.
Sports Minister Caral Ni Chuilin said the announcement was "great news for Carl and for local boxing".
"It is fitting that he should be granted the opportunity to fight for a World title. He faces a tough opponent in Kiko Martinez but Carl has defeated him before and he will no doubt be looking for a similar result in September," she said.
"While the venue has yet to be disclosed, I understand that it will be in the north and this is to be very much welcomed. There is a proud history of boxing here and it is great for all local boxing fans that a World title fight will be taking place on their doorstep."
