Newcomer Conlan eyes title showdown

By David Kelly

Jamie Conlan is closing in on a shot at the British flyweight title following the best win of his short career at the weekend.

The Belfast man, now unbeaten in six, dropped Welshman Kyle King in the second round before knocking him out in the third at the Medway Park Leisure Centre.

The victory was all the more impressive when you consider that he had to wait around for six hours before entering the ring just after midnight on Friday evening and that the King camp had their own title aspirations.

Coach/manager John Breen said: "Jamie had been at the arena from around 6pm and the the fight got cut from six to four rounds which didn't help.

"He's developing into a top professional. King came in afterwards and said that he had never been hit so hard and that included some super-bantams and featherweights he has sparred. Hopefully Jamie can get out again very soon and then come September we want that British title shot."

Meanwhile, Lisburn heavyweight Scott Belshaw suffered a second round knockout at the hands of unbeaten Lucas Browne at the Melbourne Pavilion in Victoria, Australia.

Newry welterweight Patrick Murphy enjoyed a first round stoppage win on his debut in Queensland.
