Alan Green: Berbatov and Owen can deliver goods for Manchester United

Monday, 24 August 2009

I wasn’t particularly impressed with Manchester United as I commentated on their first two games of the new league season but their second half display at Wigan on Saturday did much to dispel any concerns.

I thought two myths were exploded: Firstly that Berbatov and Rooney can’t play together and secondly that Owen is a ‘risk’.

People that still doubt the Bulgarian striker will just have to get used to his languid style because it doesn’t display a lack of interest or commitment. I think he’s a marvellous player and, as long as his partner doesn’t drop too deep or wide in his constant search for the ball, Rooney will soon relish running onto Berbatov’s sly passes.

Owen isn’t a ‘risk’. How can he be when he cost nothing and took a 50% cut in salary? His movement, albeit slower, is as perceptive as ever and the clean execution of his strike at Wigan will eradicate the memory of the misses at Turf Moor.

Whether he’s the ‘answer’ remains to be seen. I still expect Fergie to buy another attacking player.

an attacking player is important, but for me United seriously lacking of 1 creative midfielder. Fletcher, Carrick ,Anderson & even Gibson are all superb work horses but certainly not a master passer that split off defence. Giggs & Scholes are counting their final moments in United's shirt. A genius like Modric or Gourcuff type is the one seriously needed in United to compete with the rest of Europe. Sir Alex, something need to be done with Ronaldo's money..

Blame for this awful mess lies squarely with Capello

Unusually for Fabio Capello, a man who owns some highly valued pieces of art but is not given to too many flights of poetic fancy, he once said that he had a dream. It was right at the start of his England reign and it was that he would lead his team into the final of the World Cup in Johannesburg.
