Alan Green: Get real, Fabio! England are outsiders for European glory

Unless they are playing against Northern Ireland, I ALWAYS want England to win but there is the odd occasion when I dread the consequences of a victory: such as Saturday night’s, in my view, undeserved scoreline against the World and European Champions Spain.

I knew what was coming my way when the commentary ended and I switched seats at Wembley so as to present ‘6-0-6’.

Whilst there were a few sane voices, overwhelmingly callers to the programme were drowning in optimism and certainly felt that the 5 Live commentary team (that included Graham Taylor, Danny Mills and Mike Ingham as well as myself) had been negative towards England: we were all singing from the same hymn-sheet but, as usual, I took most of the flak.

The beauty of watching football is that two people can sit beside one another at a game and have completely different views of what happened.

There was I thinking that Fabio Capello’s team had been out-passed and, arguably, outclassed.

Callers vehemently disagreed: ‘look how good the defence was’; ‘how many shots did Joe Hart save?’

I found the interviews in the immediate aftermath of the match interesting.

Neither Frank Lampard nor Scott Parker were getting carried away. They spoke of how difficult it was against such outstanding opponents but how the win was undoubtedly a ‘confidence-booster’. That I agree with.

However, listening to the Italian coach, as usual, made me question his ‘use of English’ and, at times — I know it sounds ridiculous — his knowledge of the game. Just how was Parker “incredible” or “fantastic”? Is Capello confused by the term ‘he had a decent game’?

He spoke of how substitutes Jack Rodwell and Kyle Walker played “without fear”. Well, I suppose the Everton midfielder had a reasonable half-an-hour but the Spurs’ right-back was only on for five minutes! And he didn’t play at right-back: he was just another defender thrown on trying to stymie the chaos inflicted by Spain around the England penalty area. Walker will play against Sweden but where is Micah Richards?

As for Phil Jones in midfield, well, it was much the same as on his debut in Montenegro: a wonderful prospect being played out of position. Isn’t there an unanswerable case for playing Jones in the centre of defence alongside John Terry against Sweden? No, no, it’s Gary Cahill’s turn again: why persist in trying to turn Jones into something he is not?

Look, Spain have lost four friendlies since they won that World Cup Final in Johannesburg. Unquestionably they let their standards slip when the pressure isn’t on.

But this was the first time in three years that England have beaten a major nation under Capello. Would you really fancy them against Spain, Germany, Holland or even France and Italy next summer?

And, yes, I remember Denmark ‘coming off the beaches’ in 1992 and Greece confounding all expectations in 2004. But England in 2012? I hear the drums beating from the fanatics but I’m not in their camp.

Gary Neville could be key to Wayne Rooney's form at Euros

You might have thought that ruling yourself out of the first two games of football's second most important international tournament with a shocking flash of irresponsibility was quite enough to focus the mind of the nation's most gifted player.
