Alan Green: Give Beckham GB armband at Olympics, for all it’s worth

Wednesday, 25 January 2012

I laughed when I heard that David Beckham wants to captain the Great Britain Olympic team this summer. I thought he wasn’t even certain of a place in the squad yet.

Mind you, I never fail to be amazed at how highly Beckham is thought of. I’d love to know the identity of the “1 or 2 Premier League clubs” he claimed were interested in signing him. Their shirt sales must need a boost. And it’s surely only a commercial interest that triggered the approach from Paris Saint-Germain.

No, Beckham, who’ll be 37 in May, took the right course in signing on for another two years at LA Galaxy who play in that League One equivalent, Major (sic) League Soccer.

That’s about his level these days and, in my view, he was only ever ‘World Class’ in terms of his undoubted economic value.

That the California club is ‘dependent’ on Beckham is emphasised by the fact that they are happy for him to disappear to the Olympics in the middle of their league season.

So, why not make him GB captain? It’s only for publicity anyway.

Gary Neville could be key to Wayne Rooney's form at Euros

You might have thought that ruling yourself out of the first two games of football's second most important international tournament with a shocking flash of irresponsibility was quite enough to focus the mind of the nation's most gifted player.
