Alan Green: League is Liverpool’s problem

Much the worst thing Liverpool could do at the moment is to dwell on their Champions League problems.

Don’t bemoan the bad luck and stoppage time goals that cost them three group points in successive clashes with Lyon.

Accept that qualification for the knockout stage is outside of their control. Deal with the situation when it next arises and that’s a fortnight away.

The focus for Benitez and his team should be entirely on tonight’s Premier League game at Anfield against Birmingham City.

What would usually be a run of the mill fixture assumes enormous importance after just one win in eight games. The rot HAS to stop.

Before the month is out, Liverpool also play Manchester City at home and Everton away.

Both are likely to be more difficult games than this evening’s but the truth is they’re ALL winnable fixtures.

It’s essential that Liverpool find better form domestically. For now, they must concentrate on picking up league points. Let Europe take care of itself.
