Alan Green: Let stars come to the four for Liverpool

Liverpool’s season surely cannot get any worse. The defeat at Fratton Park, to a very poor team, plumbed new depths.

It can’t all be blamed on the manager (I’ll get to Benitez shortly). There wasn’t a single player, bar Reina, that deserves to escape criticism. All showed a lack of confidence and creativity.

And the frustration is getting to them. Mascherano’s challenge on Ben Haim may not have done any physical damage but the intent was there. He deserved to be sent off.

But anyone remotely familiar with the manager’s increasingly bizarre selections will point a finger at Benitez (left).

It’s been evident for months never mind weeks that Kuyt and Insua need ‘resting’.

The Dutchman was shocking on Saturday. The work-rate doesn’t disguise quite how useless he is at the moment. So why were Benayoun and Aurelio on the bench? Where is Aquilani?

Benitez ‘guarantee’ that Liverpool will finish in the top four looks more than a tad optimistic.
