Be wary of Irish Cup upsets

I know as well as anyone that shocks can happen in the Irish Cup. For the game against Newington at The Oval which contributed to the end of my time as Glentoran manager, I made a selection decision that came back to haunt me.

We had a game against Ballymena United on the Tuesday night and I felt we could rest Colin Nixon as I needed him for that game.

I felt we had a strong enough team to beat Newington without Colin, who naturally wanted to play in the game, but as we all know the nightmare unfolded.

To this day I still believe had we had Colin in the team against Newington, we would not have lost that match 1-0.

It was another reminder that you cannot underestimate any opponent. Just this week, Paris Saint-Germain needed a late winner from Zlatan Ibrahimovic to beat a fourth-tier side, Wasquehal, in the French Cup.

I can also remember the Glens needing a last-minute equaliser from Stuart Elliott at Armagh to stay in the Irish Cup. If Crusaders, Linfield and Cliftonville are chasing the title, there are a lot of other Premier League bosses desperate to win the Irish Cup and qualify for Europe.
