As the famous saying goes, in order to be the best you have to beat the best. But as time moves on and we become obsessed with ever-changing modern technology and medical research, is that ever really possible?

Take Rory McIlroy, for example. Exceptionally talented and hard-working, but he will never play against Jack Nicklaus or Tiger Woods in their prime or under the exact circumstances.

Serena Williams won her 20th Grand Slam on Saturday and yet she will spend the rest of her days being compared to the likes of Margaret Court and Steffi Graf, whether she smashes their records or not.

There’s no denying that she is the hardest female hitter of all time, but some may argue that she’s hasn’t faced the same calibre of opposition that the likes of Martina Navratilova did.

Sportspeople are now much more concerned about their mental and physical wellbeing, and the methods used to take them to the top have evolved significantly from that of their predecessors.

So, who’s to say that Rory and Serena aren’t, or won’t be, the best male or female sports stars of all time? They are both sensational athletes who, when in form, are impossible to beat.

Does it matter, though? They are the best in the world at what they do, and that won’t change any time soon.

Let’s just enjoy that.
