David Healy: Fergie’s boys will make it title treble
Friday, 15 August 2008
So, here we go again. The Premier League starts tomorrow and the big question is can anyone stop Manchester United?
I’ve tipped Sir Alex Ferguson’s side to win the title in the previous two years and they have helped make me look good.
United are favourites this time around and even though it would be great to see a more open championship this season with a few surprise packages up there, the bottom line is that it is between the ‘big four’.
Sorry to all you romantics out there, but that’s just the way it is.
Let’s take a look at the champions first.
It’s true that Cristiano Ronaldo is injured but I fancy he will be back earlier than scheduled and in any case United are more than good enough to cope until he returns with superb forwards like Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez ready to pick up the Ronaldo mantle.
There has also been lots of talk about United signing Tottenham’s Dimitar Berbatov. Defenders going to Old Trafford are going to love that.
Talking about defenders for my money United have the best central pairing in Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic and they will be helped further by the return of Gary Neville.
Like Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes, Gary will provide much needed experience. As Giggsy and Scholesy showed last season when a title race gets tight, players like them can be vital.
United are like Liverpool used to be.
The Liverpool fans deserve a big season in the league from their team. In fact I would say the Liverpool fans will demand it after years of failing to make a major challenge.
In the recent past Rafael Benitez’s (right) side have come good in the league after Christmas. They need to deliver all season though and in Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard and Robbie Keane they certainly have the players.
The first couple of months will be hugely important to them. They have to hang in there otherwise football being football, Benitez will be under big pressure.
Luis Felipe Scolari (left) knows all about pressure having managed Brazil and I’m really looking forward to seeing how he gets on in the Premier League.
He’s made a really shrewd signing in Deco and I reckon Jose Bosingwa will at last solve the problem they have had at right-back.
For me Chelsea were unlucky in the Premier League and Champions League last season. They could have won both and remember they were hit badly by injuries and had key players away at the African Nations Cup.
Chelsea are going to be a real force once more.
Arsenal will be up there but having lost very good players in Alexander Hleb and Mathieu Flamini over the summer I’m not sure they can go all the way.
Having said that you never know how many talented kids Arsene Wenger (right) has up his sleeve.
Alright then, decision time. I’m going for Manchester United to make it three in a row with Chelsea being their nearest challengers again. Don't be surprised if it goes to the final game just like last time.
My top five: 1. Manchester United, 2. Chelsea, 3. Liverpool, 4. Arsenal, 5. Spurs.
