David Healy: Manchester United would settle for a draw at Chelsea

Sir Alex Ferguson

I would imagine most people interested in football will be tuning in to see Manchester United take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

It is a must see game.

I’ve watched both sides at close quarters this season and much as it pains me to say it, at the moment my old club is definitely second best.

United aren’t playing well at all. It just goes to show you though how professional they are in terms of getting a result.

Time after time they come up with the goods, normally with just a minute to go!

Earlier this week was the perfect illustration of that.

United weren’t at it at all against CSKA Moscow and were 3-1 down at Old Trafford at one stage, but still managed to earn the point they needed to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League.

It’s been the same in the Premier League this season — picking up points with vital late goals.

They may not be playing well but they are in a good position just behind Chelsea in the table and ready to strike.

Sir Alex Ferguson would love of course to win the game on Sunday but my hunch is that if you offered him a draw, he would be happy enough with that.

United don’t have a great record at Stamford Bridge and know that Chelsea are on fire at present so a point would be good going for Sir Alex.

Chelsea seem to be scoring goals for fun these days.

They aren’t just beating teams, they are beating them with ease.

Obviously that won’t happen on Sunday but Chelsea will go into the fixture feeling confident.

My prediction is that Sir Alex’s team will use that incredible ability to get a result and earn themselves a draw.

Just a quick word on Manchester City having watched them last weekend in the 0-0 draw at Birmingham. If they really have ambitions of finishing in the top four, they are going to have to go to places at St Andrews and deliver better than they did. If not, I can’t see them getting close to a Champions League place.

You might have thought that ruling yourself out of the first two games of football's second most important international tournament with a shocking flash of irresponsibility was quite enough to focus the mind of the nation's most gifted player.
