David Healy: Reds spurred on by Keane and Berbatov
Friday, 25 July 2008
AS always at this time of year, there is much speculation about who is going where and I know Tottenham fans are getting a bit worried.
Dimitar Berbatov is being heavily linked with Manchester United while Liverpool are chasing Robbie Keane.
You may wonder why United need another forward when they already have so much class in that department, but that’s what makes Sir Alex Ferguson such a great manager.
You can’t rest on your laurels in this business and to Fergie’s credit he never does.
He knows that Berbatov is a quality player and if he gets him, I’m sure the Bulgarian will prove to be a great signing for United.
I guess United haven’t had a tall striker since Ruud van Nistelrooy moved to Real Madrid.
Berbatov would give them more presence up front and having seen him in action last season, he will offer something different with his artistry and eye for a pass.
Obviously United have Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez and Louis Saha, and don’t forget Cristiano Ronaldo, even though his saga with Real Madrid is dragging on, so Fergie would have a real selection dilemma but it is one that he would relish having.
Sir Alex won the Premier League and Champions League last season.
You just know he will be desperate to win both those trophies again and maybe another besides.
Liverpool will be desperate to stop them and that’s why they want Robbie Keane. I’m a big fan of Robbie and speaking to players like Danny Murphy, who played with him at Spurs, Keane is a big Liverpool supporter.
He’s proven in the Premier League and it seems that is the type of player Liverpool want now.
Keane isn’t the biggest player in the world, but for me he is as c lever as anyone in England.
He reminds me a little of Teddy Sheringham in that he knows how to play that withdrawn role just behind the striker perfectly.
I think he would work really well with Fernando Torres should he end up moving to Anfield.
With Peter Crouch going to Portsmouth, and that could turn out to be another shrewd piece of business from Harry Redknapp, Liverpool obviously need a replacement.
They wouldn’t go far wrong with Keane, who is not only capable of scoring goals, but making them as well.
Spurs fans, of course, will be hoping that both players stay at the Lane. They will take some replacing, that’s for sure.
Spurs may end up with £40 million in the bank, but even with all that money, it will be difficult to get players in who could do as well as Berbatov and Keane.
