David Healy: Referees need TV, not two ‘extras’

Last night in the Europa League, we had the bizarre sight of two extra officials behind the goals.

It’s the latest idea by the authorities to try and improve our game.

In my opinion it’s a waste of time.

Referees don’t need an extra two opinions to help them out — they already have two assistants and a fourth official. What they need is to be allowed to use video evidence.

I’ve long since been in favour of bringing that in especially for decisions relating to whether the ball has crossed the line or not.

As for the argument that it would break up the game and take too long, I believe that’s rubbish. In the vast majority of cases, a good official should be able to look at video evidence and make a decision very quickly and then get on the with the match.
