David Healy: Ronaldo may have Real regrets about leaving Old Trafford

Friday, 12 March 2010

Cristiano Ronaldo looked shattered following Real Madrid’s exit from the Champions League.

After his side went out against Lyon, I’m sure at some stage on Wednesday night he found out that his old club Manchester United romped into the quarter-finals with a 4-0 victory over AC Milan.

And I just wonder for a split second or maybe a lot longer if he started to regret leaving United.

Real Madrid are giving Barcelona a tremendous fight in La Liga, but the European Cup means everything to the club and once again they have failed to make any significant impact in the competition.

They spent around £200 million bringing in new players last summer, the biggest transfer being that of Ronaldo (pictured) from United.

He did his bit on Wednesday scoring for Madrid but they couldn’t close the deal and allowed Lyon back into the game to equalise and knock them out.

What made it worse for Real was that they were dumped out on their home ground and the early exit means that the dream scenario of playing in the final at the Bernabeu will not become a reality.

Over the years managers at Real have been sacked after winning the Champions League so I don’t know how Manuel Pellegrini is going to survive.

Real would love to have Arsene Wenger at their club. Rafa Benitez will be another in the frame because he is highly respected in Spain for what he did at Valencia. Then there is Jose Mourinho.

Gary Neville could be key to Wayne Rooney's form at Euros

You might have thought that ruling yourself out of the first two games of football's second most important international tournament with a shocking flash of irresponsibility was quite enough to focus the mind of the nation's most gifted player.
