David Healy: Rooney can inspire United to Anfield success
Friday, 12 September 2008
To Sir Alex Ferguson there is nothing quite like taking on Liverpool.
As far as he is concerned Manchester United against Liverpool is the biggest game in England, even the biggest game in world.
Ever since he came down from Aberdeen he has felt that way knowing that for United to become a force they had to become better than Liverpool. He’s done quite a job, hasn’t he?
Tomorrow’s match at Anfield will, as usual, have an electric atmosphere. I’m sure the Kop will be doing all they can to help Liverpool, especially if Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres are missing.
Out of all the players that Liverpool can ill afford to lose, Stevie G and Torres are the top two.
United will certainly g o into the game with a lot of confidence because of their excellent record at Anfield.
And with Wayne Rooney scoring for England in their impressive 4-1 win against Croatia in midweek, you can bet your life he will be itching to play against Liverpool. Sir Alex has a big selection decision to make because now of course he has Dimitar Berbatov. I imagine Berbatov will start. Even for a club as big as Manchester United, it would be hard to leave out a guy who cost £30 million.
There really is an embarrassment of riches at United with Berbatov, Carlos Tevez and Rooney and don’t forget Cristiano Ronaldo still has to come back.
Liverpool could do with a win but I have a hunch that United will have too much up front for them and will just nick it.
