Laverty and Dunlop will be battling for pole position at top awards

By Paul Lindsay

World Superbike star Eugene Laverty and top international road racer Michael Dunlop will go head to head for one of local motorcycling's main prizes in January.

With their career paths never likely to cross on the track, the Adelaide Motorcycle Awards is the only time the popular pair will battle it out for silverware.

Laverty will be many people's favourite after posting a phenomenal 19 World Superbike podiums this season, from which he took nine wins and narrowly missed out on taking the title.

But Dunlop has a strong army of between-the-hedges supporters and his four wins at the TT in June should help him run the Monaco-based Toomebridge man very close.

The organisers have once again teamed up with the Enkalon Motorcycle Club, meaning the winner will receive the iconic Joey Dunlop Trophy which Ryan Farquhar won back in January for his efforts in 2012.

Farquhar said: "I am sad I'll never get another chance to win the award, but also delighted to have been invited onto the judging panel this year.

"It's going to be a tough job as so many riders have had exceptional seasons."

In all more than a dozen awards, decided by a public vote and expert panel of judges chaired by former British champion Adrian Coates, will be presented.

The black tie event will welcome some of the biggest names in the sport, and will once again be hosted by BBC's Jackie Fullerton.

Details of how to vote will be announced at the start of November.

Anyone wishing to purchase tickets can email tickets@adelaidemotorcycle awards.com or telephone 075 8405 8810.

There's also a special video promotion on the TV section on the Adelaide website, which can be found at: www.adelaideinsurance.com.
