Stephen Craigan: Only way is up for Rangers

As Celtic prepare to return to the Champions League in front of 59,000 fans tonight against Benfica their cross city rivals Rangers continue their struggle to return to past glories in the Scottish Third Division. A third successive away draw in the league, this time at Annan, has left many questioning the players’ mentality — and few can argue.

Even Dean Shiels, who scored his first goal last week for Northern Ireland against Luxembourg, (right) couldn’t inspire Rangers at Annan in the 0-0 draw and it must be a worry for Ally McCoist that their away form is holding them back.

In football no matter what level you play at you have to earn the right to be successful and Rangers are coming up short.

I’ve no doubt they’ll win Division Three comfortably but for the moment the smaller teams like Annan and Berwick are having their moment of glory.
