Captain marvel Stevie G

By Steven Beacom

Talking to Brendan Rodgers in his office last year about Steven Gerrard, the Liverpool boss called his skipper "the ultimate". Fitted like a glove.

With England living on their nerves on Tuesday, and Poland pressing for an equaliser which would delay and possibly prevent World Cup qualification, Roy Hodgson needed a hero to step up and ease the tension.

Gerrard donned his cape and with desire, determination and a classy finish made it 2-0 to take England to next year's finals.

I'm glad they are there. Even with Stevie G though, a quarter-final exit on penalties is probably on the cards.
