Maria Sharapova gave 'serious consideration' to changing her name to Maria Sugarpova during the US Open to promote her new range of sweets.

Whatever next? Andy Murray Mint!

Apparently the process was too complicated, so the plans have been shelved and Maria will be just plain old Sharapova (below) at Flushing Meadows next week.

Having attended Sharapova press conferences, sweet is not how I would describe her. Tough as old boots more like.

That attitude, combined with an undoubted tennis talent, has helped her win four Grand Slam titles. Can't help thinking though that the 26-year-old Russian ice queen should have won a few more.

Last week she fired the legendary Jimmy Connors as her coach after just ONE match.

Maybe he wanted her to focus on tennis rather than selling confectionery!
