After the confessions by Renault of fixing the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix, wouldn’t it be ironic if they emerged winners when what is fast becoming an F1 circus returns there on Sunday.
Former team boss Flavio Briatore is likely to challenge his lifetime ban while the team have got away without a fine or sanction worth taking seriously.
Renault should have been sidelined for the rest of the current campaign, not given a permanent ban suspended for two years which is virtually meaningless.
Driver Nelson Piquet Jnr was granted immunity for spilling the beans on the whole distasteful affair – deliberately crashing his car under team orders to help Fernando Alonso win the race.
And so to Sunday where Alonso is 25-1 to repeat last year’s victory with Lewis Hamilton installed 3-1 ‘jolly.’
Alonso is a big 10-1 to stay with Renault next year as speculation grows that he’s on his way to Ferrari for next year. The team is evens to win a race and 1-8 to finish in a podium position.
