The Punter: Defoe is the man to strike gold

Wednesday, 25 November 2009

Jermain Defoe certainly had his scoring boots on as he produced a five-star performance for Spurs who walloped sorry Wigan 9-1 on Sunday.

The striker is in such hot form that he looks an automatic choice to be on the England flight for the World cup in South Africa next summer.

Before Sunday’s match, Defoe was a huge 14-1 chance with Ladbrokes to be awarded the Golden Boot as top striker in the Premier League during this campaign.

That price is now down to 7-2 as he stands on 11, one ahead of Liverpool’s Fernando Torres who is troubled with injury and two in front of Chelsea’s Didier Drogba and Sunderland’s Darren Bent.

Torres and Drogba are the same price as Defoe with Bent at 5s and Wayne Rooney (6-1).

Spurs are a side capable of scoring plenty and hence Defoe who is an out-and-out goal scorer remains a decent bet.

Spread firm Sporting Index suffered heavily as one punter bought Defore’s goal minutes at £50 per point at 31, and watched every goal make up to an incredible 319. The total goal minutes was 627.

Meanwhile, Hill’s are betting 40-1 that a Premiership team will score 10 this season and 11-1 that a match features 11 goals or more.

Spurs have now moved up to fourth and are 2-1 with Blue Square without the big four.
