The Punter: Kauto’s Star turn at Christmas

Kauto Star has to be a banker bet for a record fifth King George VI Chase on Boxing Day, assuming the Kempton meeting beats the freeze.

Strictly on form, nothing should beat him and a price of 11-10 is just the recipe for picking up the festive expenses.

There is also a big meeting at Leopardstown but prospects there have taken a blow with recent heavy snow in south Dublin.

No racing there is now odds-on with Betfair at 4-5 and evens the fixture goes ahead. If it does and Willie Mullins’ Mikael D’Haguenet runs in the Novice Chase, then make him also a five-star bet.

He was all over a winner but for slipping up at the last fence recently and any losses there are just lent.

Trainer Jim Lambe should have a major chance with his smart bumper winner Drumbaloo if going for a maiden hurdle at Down Royal in preference to Leopardstown.
