The Punter: McClaren to be Van the man?

Former England boss Steve McClaren took his interviewing technique to a new level when speaking to a Dutch TV journalist.

McClaren tried unsuccessfully and risibly to adopt at Dutch accent in a garbled response even though the interviewer spoke good English.

Few listened to what he was saying, more how he was saying it. The bizarre interview has been watched by nearly a million people on youtube, and the clip has moved one quirky Dublin punter to back the Englishman to change his name to Steve ‘Van’ Claren by the end of 2009.

The punter went into William Hill’s shop in Monkstown in Dublin, and wagered €10 at odds of 1000-1 that the Englishman would change his name.

The Dubliner now stands to win €10000 if the former England boss decides to show that he and quirkiness go hand-in-hand.

Tony Kenny of William Hill says: “Steve McClaren is obviously a big fan of Dick Van Dyke. “He loves umbrellas and the Dutch, and the next step for the former England boss could be to change his name to help him in his new job as coach to FC Twente.”

McClaren now speaks worse English than the Dutch!
