The Punter: Put your euro and pounds on the Europeans at Ryder Cup

Europe have regained golf’s Ryder Cup before a ball has been struck.

That’s the conclusion of Paddy Power who have decided to pay customers who backed them before last Sunday to beat the Yanks.

The concession is likely to cost the firm around £80,000 prior to the event getting under way on Friday at Celtic Manor in Wales.

The Europeans are the hot 7-10 favourites and Paddy Power said: “This is our show of support for Monty’s lads and we are happy to line the pockets of all those who have put similar faith in them.”

The company are the kings of cashbacks, paying out early and providing other concessions including a refund of all losing single bets on fourball, foursome or singles match selections if they lose before the 16th hole.

Hence, those matches where punters back a loser by 4 & 3 or worse, will get their stakes back.

Other firms such as Stan James have also got into the act in encouraging punters by offering a free bet on losing bets if the Ryder Cup finishes in a 14-14 tie for which the odds are at best, 12-1.

USA are outsiders at 6-4 but with so many imponderables and Ryder Cup rookies, it is hard to fancy them.

The maxim of being wary of a ‘wounded Tiger’ is nothing more than a cliche if one pays attention to the form of Tiger Woods and his statistical record in this event which show that he has won just ten of 25 matches.

Odds of 16-1 for him to win a maximum five matches is to be avoided.

Woods is 4-1 favourite to be top points scorer for the Stars and Stripes but better to look towards Jim Furyk (9-2) who will be on his toes after his $11.35m win last Sunday when his win in the Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta, provided him with the FedEx Cup Series bonus of $10m.

Furyk has won three times on the American tour this year and while his Ryder Cup record in fourballs is nothing to write home about, he has lost only once in six singles.

Top European points scorer: 5-1 Martin Kaymer, Rory McIlroy; 13-2 Lee Westwood; 7-1 Graeme McDowell; 8-1 Ian Poulter, Luke Donald; 10-1 Padraig Harrington; 12-1 Edoardo Molinari; 14-1 Francesco Molinari, Ross Fisher, 20-1 Miguel angel Jimenez; 33-1 Peter Hanson.

Top US points scorer: 4-1 Tiger Woods; 9-2 Jim Furyk; 5-1 Steve Stricker; 13-2 Phil Michelson; 8-1 Dustin Johnson; 10-1 Hunter Mahan; 11-1 Matt Kuchar; 14-1 Stewart Cink, Zach Johnson, 20-1 Rickie Fowler; 30-1 Bubba Watson; 40-1 Jeff Overton.

Each-way odds 1/4 places 1,2,3.

To win outright: Europe 7-10; USA 6-4; Tie 11-1. Draw no bet: Europe 8-15 USA 11-8
