The Punter: You just can’t lose out on Chelsea

Wednesday, 2 December 2009

The Premier League title race is as good as over.

Only Manchester United who are five points adrift, can deny Chelsea and those who are on at odds against, can look forward to collecting.

In fact, Carlo Ancelotti’s side could go the rest of the season unbeaten in the league, such is their strength and dominance.

No surprise therefore to see Chelsea at 8-15, but a better bet is evens that they will stay top for the remainder of the campaign as only United have any hope of dislodging them.

United are 5-2 to win for a record fourth time in a row and those who have taken solid wagers on the London Blues, can look at saving their outlays on the Red Devils.

It is futile to consider any other scenario other than Chelsea-United for the top two spots and Fergie’s boys will have to beat Didier Drogba and company at Old Trafford on April 3 to have any chance. A draw there and the curtain comes down on the title race.

Remarkably, one of Chelsea’s two defeats was at Wigan — the other against Aston Villa — but there is a fair chance that there won’t be another one from now until May.

Currently, the FA Cup holders, they have been installed as 9-2 joint-favourites along with United — who else — following the third round draw which sees them with an easy one at home to Watford. Likewise, United should have no trouble first time up against Kettering Town or Leeds United.

Hill’s are very short on the Londoners at 100-30 and are going 9-2 for a league and cup double which is unlikely to attract many customers as they can surely get better elsewhere.

For those who think Chelsea will sweep the board with four trophies can have 50-1 with the same firm.

Drogba’s 86th minute goal against Arsenal on Sunday, saw Paddy Power return all losing stakes on first goalscorer, correct score and scorecast markets.

Sporting Index lost heavily on the spreads in this game, with one punter buying Drogba’s goal minutes at 21 for £500 a point. The market made up at 127, giving the customer a tasty £53,000.

As for the FA Cup winners, look no further than the big four. It is 8-13 that Chelsea, United, Arsenal or Liverpool lift the trophy and 6-5 anyone else.

Most layers expect United and Chelsea to fight it out for the major trophies with the Blues quoted at 4-6 by Hill’s to win more than the Reds who are 100-30 in the match bet and 3-1 a tie.

Again, the wind of fortune is with Chelsea who should be thereabouts in all four with the Premier League theirs to lose.

On the Scottish front, it would be a brave man that would back Rangers to win anything, such is their current form.

So 15-8 second favourites behind Celtic at 6-4, is nothing to get excited about and neither is the odds offered about the Bhoys.

Better to look for a bit of each-way value and Dundee United might just provide that at 14-1 with 1/3 the odds for reaching the final.
