Cricket: Howzat for a great year

Youth cricket at Cregagh cricket club is in good hands

Cregagh Cricket Club's youth section completed its 2007 coaching programme with an open night at the club.

The event attracted 53 participants, both male and female, aged between nine and 15 with each one receiving a trophy to mark their involvement.

The evening was kindly supported by Belfast City Council via its Support for Sport Scheme.

On the same evening awards were also presented to members of the Under 15 team who had played for the club during the year. They were:

Best Batsman: Sameer Masih

Best Bowler: Craig Copeland

Best All rounder: Sameer Masih

Best Fielder: Bob Moore

Best Attitude: Shane Kelly

U15 Captain: Craig Osborne

The Under 15s won three of their six games, a great improvement on 2006 which was their first ever year. One of the main reasons was the engagement by the club of Stephen Donnelly as head of youth coaching, supported by Stuart Catterson.

For the first time in its 101 year history, Cregagh Cricket Club this season fielded an Under 11 team.

In their first competitive game they defeated Portadown in an exciting and keenly contested game at Gibson Park. They eventually bowed out at the quarter final stage going down by six wickets to eventual finalists Saintfield. Several other friendly games followed throughout the season with the boys and girls getting valuable experience for the league campaign in 2008. With most of the Under 11 squad being between eight and 10, most have still a couple of years at this level ensuring the future is bright in east Belfast cricket. The 2007 awards winners were:

Best Batsman: Adam McCormick

Best Bowler: James Hume

Best All-rounder: James Harper

Best Fielder: Lewis Cunningham

Best Attitude: Chrissie McKee

The youth section will continue in 2008 and there are plans for more games at both U15 and U11 levels.
