Carrickfergus and Decker Curry in hunt for top awards

By Ian Callender

Carrickfergus have YMCA Dublin and Cork County as rivals for the Club of the Year at this year's Cricket Ireland Awards.

The newly promoted Ulster Bank Premiership side completed a clean sweep of trophies last season, adding the RSA National Cup, Ulster Shield and Twenty20 Shield to their Section One title and with their 2nd XI, 4th XI and Under 15s also putting trophies in the cabinet, everyone north of the border will make them favourites for the prestigious award.

YMCA won the Leinster Division One title and their 3rd XI were also champions, although it was the nine junior titles that probably earned their nomination.

Cork County won the Munster League as well as Leinster Division Two, earning them promotion to the top flight next season.

Former Ireland international Decker Curry heads the nominations for the Club Player of the Year.

After opting out of cricket in 2013, Curry signed for Ardmore at the age of 47 and scored more than 1,000 runs in another remarkable personal season.

Current international Stuart Thompson is one of the other nominees in this category for his performances with Eglinton, with Andrew Poynter, another World Cup hopeful, and his Leinster Lightning team-mate Simi Singh of YMCA completing the line-up.

Ireland captain William Porterfield is up against Max Sorensen and Kevin O'Brien for the top award, the International Player of the Year.

The winners will be announced next Monday and the awards handed over at the annual Cricket Ireland lunch in Dublin the following Friday.
