Chase and Smith lead the way as Wolves show their bite

By Ian Callender

Peter Chase and Nathan Smith bowled the Ireland Wolves into a superb position after the first day of their three-day game against Scotland A in Claremont Road.

Chase took two wickets in his first four overs and Smith one in seven accurate overs as the Scots finished the day on 53 for five in reply to the Wolves' 350.

The classy Ed Joyce and the in-form Simi Singh both scored half centuries but the third highest score of the day with 64 was Tyrone Kane, who was not even at the ground when the game started as he was a late call-up for Shane Getkate, who suffered a niggle in the warm-up and was pulled out along with Craig Young, who was also ruled not 100 per cent fit.

But Smith took his chance with the new ball, and thanks to a superb catch at second slip by Andrew Balbirnie, took a wicket with his fourth ball.

Chase followed with the superb late movement to twice find the edge and the Scots were reeling at eight for three.

The experienced Craig Wallace, a familiar foe in the senior team, led the comeback but Jacob Mulder trapped him plumb in front with the last ball of the day.

The most impressive aspect of the Ireland batting was the scoring rate.

They faced just 78 overs with Joyce's 65 coming from 75 balls with 11 fours, Singh hit 71 off 78 balls with nine fours and three sixes before he was finally out, caught in the gully after 265 runs in three Wolves innings.

Balbirnie was the only failure of the day and that by itself should ensure that the Wolves will bat again, no matter the size of the lead.
