Cusack back for Ireland

All-rounder Alex Cusack will return to the Ireland squad for their ICC World Twenty20 qualifiers in the United Arab Emirates next month.

The influential Clontarf player was hampered in the summer, and missed the one-day international against England in September, with a back injury.

Experienced all-rounder Andrew White has not been included but does make the squad for the Intercontinental Cup final against Afghanistan in December.

Ireland are bidding to reach the World T20 finals for a fourth successive time. The tournament will be held in Bangladesh next spring.

Ireland's squad for the 16-team qualifying event features 12 of the 15 players that made up the party for the 2012 finals in South Africa.

Andrew McBrine, James Shannon and John Mooney are the players to come in.

Coach Phil Simmons said: "There's no secret that I like a lot of experience in my squads and this one's no different.

"Most of the guys have played in World Cup finals and are used to pressure, which always comes with these qualifying tournaments.

"It's good to have Alex back in the frame. He's an intelligent cricketer and a very canny bowler to have especially in the powerplays.

"It was difficult to leave Andrew White out of the T20 squad, but he hasn't played much for us in the format, and the selectors felt that it was a good chance to take a look at some of the other contenders.

"He's been one of our main performers in the longer form of the game, so he'll be back for the Inter Continental Cup final against Afghanistan."

Former captain Trent Johnston, 39, is named in both squads but will retire from international cricket at the end of the calendar year.

Six teams from the World T20 qualifier in the UAE will join the 10 full-member nations at the tournament proper, which starts next March.
