Eglinton and Bready have cup glory on horizon
Eglinton and Bready may be struggling in the Senior League but they have the spotlight to themselves on Sunday when they meet in the Faughan Valley Cup final at Beechgrove.
It is a first appearance in the annual charity final for Tyrone section winners Bready since 1999 - they have never won the cup - while Eglinton have won the Derry section for the first time since 2005 but it is 16 years since the last of their six cup successes.
Bready won the first league clash between the teams just three weeks ago - they meet again next Sunday at Eglinton - but only by 10 runs and back to back defeats to Fox Lodge and basement club Bonds Glen left them struggling at the wrong end of the league table.
Victory over Glendermott last weekend, when they scored 226 for three in just 30 overs, however should be a real confidence booster and they also have the advantage of getting used to the Beechgrove surface tomorrow when they take on Brigade in their Senior One league game.
That Bonds Glen victory put the pressure on Eglinton who, since beating the Bee Gees, have lost their last five league matches and are just one win above last year's Senior Two champions but their 'warm-up' match today is against Donemana, the only other team they have beaten this season.
That result however, on the second weekend, remains Donemana's only defeat and they put themselves right into title contention with the sensational last-wicket partnership of 92 between James McBrine and Jordan McGonigle last week which helped beat defending champions Strabane.
In last night's action, Brigade beat Coleraine by four wickets, off the last ball. They had only 39 overs to score the required 235.
Scores: At Beechgrove, Coleraine 234-7 (40 overs, D Cooke 79 not out, M Salman 43) Brigade 235-6 (39 overs, A-ur-Rehman 73, M Simpson 45not out, M Moran 37, I Hussein 22, N Donnell 19 not out; D Cooke 2-46). Brigade won by four wickets.
Tomorrow: Henderson Properties Senior League One (1pm): Bonds Glen v Glendermott, Brigade v Bready, Eglinton v Donemana, Limavady v Fox Lodge, Strabane v Coleraine.
Sunday: Faughan Valley Cup final (Beechgrove, 4.30pm): Eglinton v Bready.
Sperrin Springs Cup final (1pm): Creevedonnell v St Johnston.
