Ireland chiefs are left sweating on Sorensen injury

By Ian Callender

Max Sorensen remains a major doubt for Ireland's pre-World Cup tour to Australia and New Zealand with Cricket Ireland refusing to confirm his presence in the squad which leaves on Tuesday.

Sorensen injured his wrist in the final ODI against Scotland at Malahide last week and saw a specialist on Wednesday. An update is expected today. If he fails to make the trip, Gloucestershire and former Fox Lodge pace bowler Graeme McCarter is the likely replacement.

Sorensen missed the Newstalk inter-provincial Cup game against Northern Knights last Sunday and remains out for tomorrow's return at Rathmines (10.15am).

The other good news for Knights is that also missing from the Leinster Lightning team will be Andrew Poynter who is unavailable after hitting a superb 123 not out at the Lawn. Poynter is replaced by Ben Ackland in the only change to the side which clinched their second trophy with a 47 runs victory.

The Knights have been forced to make two changes for the final game of the season with Greg Thompson and Nigel Jones both unavailable and likely to be replaced by Waringstown teenage batsman Adam Dennison and Muckamore opening bowler Neil Gill. Dennison was 12th man last Sunday but seems set to make his one-day debut for the Knights, with Civil Service North all-rounder Chris McMorran the new face in the squad.

Meanwhile, the last place in next year's North West Premiership will be decided this weekend when Ardmore, Eglinton and Glendermott face-off in a double header at Bready (both games start at 11am).

The former two finished joint sixth, with only relegated Fox Lodge below them and meet tomorrow, with the losers facing Glendermott, the Championship runners-up, in the relegation play-off on Sunday.

However, Glendermott must go into their biggest game of the season without professional Roy Silva – he of the 295 not out in an Ulster Shield match this season – so whoever loses tomorrow will be hot favourites to keep their place in the Premiership for 2015.

Leinster Lightning: J Mooney (capt), J Anderson, B Ackland, Yaqoob Ali, A Balbirnie, T Kane, F McAllister, B McCarthy, C McLoughlin, D Murphy, K O'Brien, A van der Merwe

Northern Knights: A White (capt), S Bunting, A Dennison, C Dougherty, P Eaglestone, S Getkate, N Gill, J McCollum, C McMorran, L Nelson, Z Rushe, J van der Merwe.
