Muckamore make strides towards glory

It's a finals weekend in Comber because hot on the heels of the Challenge Cup showdown between North Down and CIYMS there are two more on Sunday in the Metal Technology Twenty20 competitions.

First up, at 11.30am, Saintfield meet Cliftonville in the Shield decider and scheduled for a 3pm start is the Cup final between CIYMS and Muckamore.

Much may depend on the result of the ‘big one’ on how CI approach their second final in three days but there is no doubting Muckamore will be fired up and raring to go.

Their performance in the semi final, against Instonians at Shaw’s Bridge last week, underlined the talent of the club destined for a return to the Premier League next season after an absence of eight years.

Led by the enthusiastic Andy McCullough, it is a team full of big league experience. So on Sunday, CI will come up against Wayne Horwood (pictured) and Ralph Coetzee, ex-Civil Service North, and Davy Cardwell, ex-Woodvale, plus professional Indrajeet Kamtekar, loyal servants Brian Baguley and Brian Dunlop as well as Neil Gill, who spent a season at Instonians.

They will also have Jason van der Merwe back at the top of the order after a successful European Championship campaign with Ireland Under 19s and, judging by his batting in the Twenty20 semi final, more than capable of doing it on the senior stage.

With only two other games in the NCU — both in Section Two — a competition that appears to have stalled could get a rousing finale and a decent crowd at The Green.
