Rectory task won't faze Dandekar
The quarter-finals of the Ulster Cup may be dominated by NCU teams (6-2) but, one level down, the draw for the Ulster Shield, made on Sunday after the final three first rounds games, was much more straightforward with the final eight equally split between NCU and North West sides.
Two of Sunday's winners, Downpatrick and Bonds Glen, will meet at The Meadow on Sunday week while Cliftonville, for whom professional Avadoot Dandekar continues to show his class, must travel to Glendermott.
The small ground at the Rectory however will not be an inconvenience to Dandekar, who announced himself in Section One with an innings of 199 not out, followed up with 72 and last Saturday hit 124 before top scoring again against Creevedonnell with 61 out of 232 for six in Cliftonville's 27 runs Shield win.
Bonds Glen needed only 14 overs to reach their victory target of 73 in a surprisingly easy eight wickets win against Derriaghy and Downpatrick had six wickets in hand when they passed St Johnston's 125.
In the Ulster Plate, the innings of the day was played by Eglinton's Karl O'Doherty who scored 122, four more than the entire Instonians II side who lost by 168 runs.
Holders North Down II beat Donemana II by four wickets at Comber but last year's beaten finalists, Waringstown II, fell at the first hurdle, losing by 21 runs to Strabane II for whom John Gillespie hit 75 not out in the Red Caps' 208 for eight.
Wayne Horwood, who made his seasonal debut the previous day in Civil Service North's Ulster Cup win at Ardmore, obviously used that innings of 22 as a warm-up for Sunday's Plate tie at home to Coleraine II. He scored 52 as the Stormont side reached their target of 143 with almost 11 overs to spare.
Ulster Shield quarter-finals: Downpatrick v Bonds Glen, Holywood v Burndennett, Killyclooney v Carrickfergus, Glendermott v Cliftonville. Games to be played on Sunday June 15.
Ulster Plate quarter-finals: CSNI II v Bready II, Downpatrick II v Strabane II, Brigade II v North Down II, Eglinton II v Bond's Glen II or CIYMS II. Games to be played on Sunday June 22.
