Waringstown breeze into final as Coleraine batsmen fail to impress

By Ian Callender

Waringstown set up a repeat of last year's Irish Cup final at the quarter-final stage on July 9, when they ended North West interest in this year's competition with a emphatic eight wickets victory over Coleraine at The Lawn.

Last year's beaten finalists needed only 25 overs to pass the Bannsiders' disappointing 167-7 as James Hall and James McCollum put on 131 for the second wicket from 120 balls. McCollum was out for 51, just nine short of victory, but Hall finished the game in style, with his fourth six, to go with 12 fours, his 91 coming off just 72 balls.

Not for the first time, Coleraine captain David Cooke defied opposition, he finished 71 not out from 130 balls but received little help from team-mates. Hall was also the most economical bowler, with 1-17 from his 10 overs.

Waringstown now have home advantage and the chance of revenge against Merrion but North Down must head south to Pembroke after they hammered Bready by nine wickets yesterday. Ireland international Andrew Balbirnie and Nick Cutler were both undefeated after adding 199, following David Scanlon's early breakthrough.

There was also a heavy defeat for Donemana in their rearranged game at The Hills, bowled out for 143 and despite Junior McBrine, playing in place of the injured Dwyane McGerrigle, having figures of 10-5-15-0, the Leinster side won by six wickets. In the Gardiner Bros Premier League, CIYMS, set 227 to beat Carrickfergus, were 38-4 but Nigel Jones and Matt McGillivray saw them up to joint second without further loss, while in the T20 Cup, Civil Service North kept their hopes of a semi-final place alive with victory over Instonians.

•PAKISTAN won the Champions Trophy with a crushing 180 runs victory over rivals India.
