Banbridge rider Mark Downey will look to build on one of the best results of his career after he took silver in the Men's U23 Points Race at the UEC Track Junior and U23 European Championships in Italy.

Downey was just outside the podium positions for most of the race, but towards the end he managed to work his way through the field, eventually overtaking Frenchman Benjamin Thomas in the closing laps to come second behind England's Jonathan Dibben.

"I can't believe it," Downey said after the race. "It's amazing; I was sitting third with 10 laps to go, I saw the French guy (Thomas) was under pressure so I knew it was time to go.

"It was a case of all or nothing. I emptied the tank."

Downey will next compete tomorrow alongside Fintan Ryan in the Madison.

"Now it's back to reality," the Banbridge rider stated. "We have done a nice bit of work for the Madison, and I'm not going to let Fintan down."
