Arrogant Arsenal need to show some respect
Monday, 19 February 2007
Without question Arsenal are the most entertaining team in England. And back in the 2003-2004 campaign when they went unbeaten in the Premiership, the Gunners arguably played the finest football Britain has ever seen.
They have the best scouting network in Europe, a brilliant manager in Arsene Wenger, some of the best players on the planet, including the magical Thierry Henry, and an array of gifted youngsters who are the envy of every other side in the world.
Yet there are several overriding factors that persist at the north London outfit, which if they are not careful will make them one of the most despised clubs in football.
Arrogance, petulance and the type of spoilt baby attitude that you would hate to see in your kids drips from those famous red shirts.
For a club who pride themselves on having class, they have shown precious little of it lately.
Take what happened at the Emirates Stadium over the last two weekends.
First up Wigan, fighting for their lives in the top flight, produced a superb performance to take the lead in a league game.
The visiting goalkeeper Chris Kirkland wasn't exactly racing to take goal-kicks as Arsenal pressed for an equaliser, but why would he?
Time wasting? Maybe a little, but not anything like the antics of Jens Lehmann when the Gunners are ahead.
When Arsenal scored, Henry collected the ball and pushed it into Kirkland's face in one of the most childish acts I have ever witnessed on a football pitch.
Henry is at times the perfect footballer, full of style and grace with an end product, but in that moment he was pathetic. Really pathetic.
It's not the first time that Thierry has spat the dummy out. In Paris last year he blamed the referee following his side's Champions League final defeat to Barcelona when it was Henry himself at fault for Arsenal's failure after missing a host of chances. It was a French whine that left a bitter taste.
The latest bout of Arsenal arrogance came on Saturday when Cesc Fabregas had a go at Blackburn boss Mark Hughes, formerly a Barcelona player, for not sending his team out to play the Nou Camp way in the scoreless draw in the FA Cup.
Do me a favour. Hughes can tell his team to play whatever way they like and at the weekend his tactics worked a treat. Blackburn defended superbly and Arsenal, plain and simple, weren't good enough to break them down.
Just one other thing - while Fabregas is an excellent young midfielder, he'll do well in his career to match Hughes, who for over a decade was one of the most dangerous front men in Europe.
It's not just Henry and Fabregas who should show more respect. Kolo Toure, Emmanuel Eboue, and Lehmann can never accept when a referee's decision goes against them. Wenger really needs to have a word, not that he ever sees his players do anything wrong of course.
Cut out the arrogance Arsenal and stick to being awesome.
