Transfer news and speculation, 22 May

Thursday, May 22, 2008

Xabi Alonso could be on the brink of a £12m move to Juventus. It has been reported in the Italian media that Juventus director, Jean-Claude Blanc, was in Liverpool on Tuesday for a meeting with manager Rafael Benitez, who is seeking to raise funds to restructure his squad.

Although Alonso, who is in Spain's squad for European Championship next month, has recently claimed he still sees his future at Anfield, a move to Italy would certainly interest the midfielder. Alonso also found his first-team appearances restricted this season following the arrival of Javier Mascherano and Lucas.

Spurs cool interest in Eto'o

Tottenham have distanced themselves from reports linking the club with a bid for Barcelona's Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o, who is deemed surplus to requirements at the Nou Camp. Both the Tottenham manager, Juande Ramos, and Damien Comolli, their sporting director, were believed to have had meetings with Eto'o's representatives recently – a claim firmly denied by the north London club.

Sinclair handed a free transfer

Trevor Sinclair has been released by the FA Cup finalists Cardiff City after an injury-hit season in which the former West Ham and Manchester City midfielder made just 16 starts.

Demotion leads to Shorey sale

After relegation from the Premier League, Reading will listen to offers for England left-back Nicky Shorey, a likely target for West Ham, Aston Villa and Newcastle.
