Don't leave Liverpool for Real Madrid, Torres tells Xabi Alonso

Wednesday, 29 July 2009

Fernando Torres has stated that it would be a massive blow to Liverpool’s hopes of glory this season if Xabi Alonso left for Real Madrid.

The Spanish giants' pursuit of the midfielder is set to come to a head with Reds manager Rafael Benitez keen for the Spain international's future to be cleared up before his squad reassemble tomorrow following a three-day break.

It is understood that Benitez has threatened to pull the plug on negotiations if Madrid do not meet his £30million valuation of the player before the weekend – and Torres is hoping his compatriot stays with the club.

Kop hero Torres said: “It would be a bad piece of work if Xabi left – he plays his cards close to his chest so I don't know what is going to happen.

“I'd put Xabi's own wishes ahead of everything else, of course, but he's got three years left on his contract with us and I'd love it if he stays.

“It would be a serious loss for Liverpool if he left this summer.”

Blame for this awful mess lies squarely with Capello

Unusually for Fabio Capello, a man who owns some highly valued pieces of art but is not given to too many flights of poetic fancy, he once said that he had a dream. It was right at the start of his England reign and it was that he would lead his team into the final of the World Cup in Johannesburg.
