Hughes makes A-League debut, but not a happy one

On the same date that Northern Ireland defeated Latvia 1-0 at Windsor Park, Aaron Hughes made his A-League debut for Melbourne City in Australia.

Friday the 13th of November did not prove so lucky for the former Newcastle United and Fulham defender, who had overcome a niggly calf injury to play.

Melbourne lost 3-0 at home to Western Sydney Wanderers continuing an indifferent run of form with Northern Ireland star Hughes taken off after 45 minutes as a precautionary measure.

Melbourne City head coach John van't Schip said: "We had to change Aaron Hughes at half-time, he got problems again and we heard just before the start of the second half that he had to step off."

Not the ideal start for Hughes, though he still remains part of Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill's plans for next year.
